Federal

After originally being set up as the Bailey Motor Truck Co. in 1911, the company name was changed that same year to the Federal Motor Truck Co. The first Federal was bonneted chain-drive 1-tonner with a 4-cylinder Continental gasoline engine, Shaft drive was introduced in 1916, by which time a range of trucks from 1 1/2 to 3 tons was available. A 5-ton model appeared in 1917 folloed by a 7-tonner in 1918. The lighter models had pneumatic tyres from 1921. By the mid '20s Federal was pne of America's major truck producers. As early as 1929 a sleeper cab was being offered on the larger tractor units and pneumatic tyres and front-wheel brakes had become the norm. Bold cab styling was adopted in the late '30s and cabover trucks were added to the range from 1937. By 1939 Federal has produced over 100.000 trucks.

During World War II Federal built heavy-duty 6x6 wreekers withn 180 bhp Hercules gasoline engine plus a 20-ton 6x4 tractor powered by a Cummins two-stroke diesel of 130 bhp. The distinctive Styliner range appeared in 1951, powered by Federal's own 145bhp Power Chief gasoline engine. In 1952 the company became the Federal Fawick Corporation but was taken over by Napeo Industries in 1955, production being relocated at Minneapolis. For the las few years the company built specialized heavy vehicles in ever-diminishing numbers, and production ceased altogether in 1959.
