Dongfeng

Historically also known as "Second Automobile", Dongfeng, or East Wind in Chinese, was founded in 1981 or 1969. Perhaps its origins lie in a 1968 dictate of Chairman Mao Zedong; as part of his "Third Front" strategy, the far inland location in Hubei Province meant to protect it from foreign invasion. Traditionally manufacturing commercial vehicles, by 2001 these made up roughly half of production.

DFAC , situated in the ancient city of Xiangfan, has now become a splendid pearl in the automobile corridor. Our company is a shareholding company, initiated solely by DFM and founded with capital raised from the public. DAFC presently has three factories, namely, Light-duty Automobile Factory and Foundry Plant, and owns 50% stocks of Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co.,Ltd. DFAC has a total number of 1 billion stocks, of which 70 percent is owned by DFM as state legal person and 30 percent is owned by the public. DFAC is a High-tech orientationed enterprise, mainly engaged in the designing, development, manufacturing and sales of Dongfeng series light-duty automobiles and Dongfeng Cummins diesel engine. DFAC is set to become one of the light-duty automobile and diesel engine producers with the most advanced technology and the biggest capacity nationwide after it has achieved the capacity of 100,000 light-duty automobiles in the next two to three years.

Dongfeng Motor Corporation (hereafter referred to as DFM) was first established in 1969 and has commanded a leading position in the PRC automotive industry ever since. After more than thirty years of construction, DFM has formed several major production facilities, which are distributed in Shiyan ( mainly engaged in the production of medium duty and heavy duty commercial vehicles, auto parts and components and vehicle manufacturing equipments), Xiangfan ( mainly engaged in the production of light duty commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles), Wuhan ( mainly engaged in the production of passenger vehicles) and Guangzhou ( mainly engaged in the production of passenger vehicles). On September 28th, 2003, DFM moved its operating center from Shiyan to Wuhan. Major businesses of the company include the manufacture of whole serial commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, auto parts and components, as well as vehicle manufacturing equipments. At present, the product mix in its automaking business is equally divided between commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles. By the end of 2004, total asset of DFM amounts to RMB 76.89 billion, with a net asset of RMB 33.9 billion and a total number of 106,000 registered staff.

Entering the new century, DFM focuses on participating in international competition and cooperation. Complying with the development strategy of “ developing during integrating, cooperating during competing, growing stronger and bigger, building strength first”, DFM rapidly expanded its passenger vehicle business by aligning itself with leading international automotive companies. It successively entered into joint ventures for the manufacture of passenger vehicles with Nissan Motor Co., Ltd, Honda Motor Co., Ltd and Kia Motors Corporation. It expanded and promoted its scope of operations of Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobiles Limited to include the manufacture of Peugeot passenger cars in addition to the Citroen passenger cars already manufactured by it. After comprehensive joining venture and restructuring, the corporate structure and mechanism of DFM underwent a profound reform. Pursuant to international practice and modern corporate governance system, a comparatively standardized Parent-Affiliates company structure has been formed, which enables DFM to become an international automaker characterized by both investment control and management control.

Through years of development, DFM has formed leading edge automotive research and development capabilities. DFM seeks extensive cooperation with external parties and formed complete R&D platforms and its supporting system , engaged in the research and development of whole serial commercial vehicles as well as passenger vehicles. It also further improves its products planning and R&D flow. Based on assimilating advanced technology from both home and abroad, DFM aims to further enhance its own R&D capabilities in order to improve its core competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.

The Dong Feng Motor Corporation was originally known as the Second Automobile Works, which was established 1967 by relocating part of the facilities and technicians of the First Automobile Works to the rural area in Hubei Province. The Dong Feng (export name: Aeolus) EQ2081 6x6 2.5-tonne series truck first entered service in 1975 as the Dong Feng EQ240 and was the company's first product. The original EQ240 vehicle, powered by EQ6100/6105 petrol engines, has been continually updated and a number of more recent technologies have been inserted into the design since the 1980s. The current model, designated EQ2081E, is powered by the improved EQ6100-18 petrol engine. The EQ240 designation changed to EQ2081 in the 1990s with the introduction of the new motor vehicle designation system. The EQ2082E6D is fitted with a Cummins 6BT5.9 5.88-litre diesel engine. The Dong Feng EQ2100 6x6 3.5-tonne series truck (formerly known as the EQ245) is slightly larger than, but visually similar to, the EQ2081 series from which it derives. An EQ6105-1 petrol engine powered the earlier EQ2100E. The Dong Feng EQ2080/2081 and EQ2100 series of trucks are in use with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in large numbers. The EQ2061E is a 4 x 41.5-tonne payload-class troop-carrying/cargo truck that is derived from the EQ2081. The Dong Feng EQ2102 6 x 6 3.5-tonne truck is a second-generation high-mobility vehicle that entered service in the mid-1990s to replace a selection of designs that had been in service since before the 1980s. Unlike models previously mentioned, the EQ2102isofCOEIayout. Dong Feng also produces the EQ1093F6D 4x4 five-tonne truck. The PLA uses a large number of these vehicles, which are similar in appearance to a wide variety of Dong Feng bonneted commercial 4x2 trucks.
